Hello friends. It's another exciting week in music. There are several great bands coming to Saskatoon in the next few weeks and some great new albums have come out (such as Let It Sway by SSLYBY). Also, it turns out Kanye West's next album will feature the haunting sounds of Bon Iver. We're playing a great Kanye song near the end of the show in anticipation of what is sure to be the best album of all time. Of all time!

The song "Astronauts of Fate," which we are playing this week, is the latest installment of a Ghost Shirt project that they're calling 52 singles in 52 weeks. This is number 24 and, like all the others, it's an astonishing classic. They're releasing a brand new track every week and so far they've all been great. Here are some cool videos. The first is the music video for the song "What To Say" by Born Ruffians from their upcoming album Say It.

Perennial favourites of the show Sebastien Grainger (formerly of Death From Above) and Josh Reichmann (currently of The Josh Reichmann Oracle Band) have formed a group together, awesomely titled Bad Tits. They're using the familiar aspects of their old music, heavy guitar from Grainger and amazing synth from Reichmann, but they treat them very differently. Through some substantial producing they come up with a new sound that should delight their older fans. Also, the video is wacky and awesome.

Finally, London, ON emcee Shad, has a new album about to be released title TSOL. Yaa, I Get It is the first single from the album, and the video feature Shad roaming the streets in a distinct 99 Problems style.

We Say Die! collapsed on stage and later died of a brain hemmorage a Vancouver hospital. A sad day for everyone on the Canadian music scene. The drummer is the backbone of any group and he kept YSP!WSD! going.

It's a damn shame.

We've got a pretty good show this week, but not great since Ishmael and I are both heading to a Student Press conference tomorrow for a weekend of illicit activities. But we do still have some interesting stuff for you.

Mostly, I 'm excited about the Toronto "super-group" Novels. They are formed by members from Tokyo Police Club, Born Ruffians, Will Curry and the Country French, and others. They're not really a band though, just an experiment. They formed and recorded an album and then planned to never sell it, promote it or even play a show. Their marketing strategy depends entirely upon people downloading the music for free from their website [okaynovels.com] and distributing it themselves. They've set up a gallery where you can post pictures of yourself sharing their album in new and inventive ways.

It's a really interesting project and it's the kind of thing that I hope we'll start to see more of in the future.

This week, since I put the show together for the first time in months, I was actually able to put some songs on that I was really jazzed about. Not that I don't get jazzed about Ishmael's selections, they're just not mine to claim.

First off, I have a song from the compilation album of Clash covers, The Sandinista Project. I stumbled upon the album by happenstance, luckily catching it in the one day window where it was free to download, and have spent the time between then and now weeding out the good from the bad.There are 37 tracks on the album by 37 different bands, including the noteworthy version of The Crooked Beat, covered by Wreckless Eric. The stand out best contribution, however, belongs to Stew, the New York funk/soul/jazz/experimental electronica outfit.
Their version of Broadway is so different from the source material that it takes off in a completely different direction. And that's the great thing about a good cover, it's not a faultless reproduction of the original, it's supposed to be a fun interpretation. Stew does this very well.

Next up we have another cover. This time from a Canadian group, Metric, and a cover of a Bob Dylan song. Unlike Broadway, this version of Don't Think Twice It's Alright doesn't stray too far from the original. The tempo is nearly identical, but that's not why it's getting a post here.
The reason is that this song reminds you just how good Emily Haines' voice is. It's easy to overlook when you're distracted by Metric's typical powerpop noise and Haines' depressing solo music, but this song is sung with such simple joy. With only a guitar to accompany her, Haines' voice really comes through and that's why the song deserves more exposure.

Finally I'm going to give to you the standout best song to appear on the show this week. I hope I Become a Ghost is a song that I got from the ever-dejected John Campbell's blog, which is hilarious and full of good stuff.
The song, ably performed by L.A.s The Deadly Syndrome, is much more akin to the type of thing I normally post on this blog — if I would ever actually posted to this blog. And it's also the one that I have the least to say about. It's a wonderful rock tune. Driving vocals, adorable themes and just a hint of piany music. Enjoy.

Matthew's Finest, July 8th, 2009 - Polaris Pix edition

This week we played a number of selections from albums, or bands, that have been placed on the Polaris short list. I first became aware of the award 3 years ago on a CBC Radio 3 podcast and I treated it like everything that Grant Lawrence puts in front of me, important, but annoying and dripping with irresponsible amounts of self congratulatory Candiana. And then I watched the Junos. Seeing the state of mainstream Canadian music makes you realize that indie music is almost, and in some cases more important and wonderful than even its sappiest proponents make it seem.

It's this exact same sentiment that I have for Hey, Rosetta!

When I first heard them they simply didn't get to me. I had heard from some very reliable sources that they were an absolutely fabulous band but it took me a long time to see it myself. For the show I listen to so much prospective music that it's hard to ever remember the good ones over the amazing ones. Probably one in ten songs I look at while compiling my playlist get lost in the mess that is my iTunes library. This was the case with Hey Rosetta! it took a live show and a serious examination of their album Into Your Lungs to fully appreciate the depth of their sound. They are a great fucking band and after a live show that left me more satisfied than 80% of my sexual experiences, I was completely won over. This St. John's group has a lot to offer and they are my absolute pick for the lofty Polaris Prize and it's cash reward.

This week (or month, or however long it's been since I last posted anything) I'm putting up two songs by bands or artists from Portland, Oregon. The city puts out massive amounts of music (Modest Mouse, the Decemberists, Everclear!) despite the fact that it's in Oregon, the Manitoba of the United States.

The first is by Grey Anne, formerly known as Per Se. The singer has a nice voice and a unique enough sounding background to lay it over that her songs don't get lost in the typical indie traps. The song is Riddle and it's vaguely activist lyrics are both challenging and entertaining.

The next is a song from Eat Skull, a delightful, de-tuned band who I must say is much more my style. I can respect Grey Anne's artistry, but I love this raw, poorly produced sound. Calling it poorly produced might be a skosh unfair actually. The sound that they achieve is so obviously intentional that the production can't be a mistake and for that reason, the technical merits of the album should be celebrated just as much as those of any band with clear harmonies and wonderful sound quality.

Eat Skull produces the kind of music that I, and I alone, enjoy immensely. Not being a musician myself, I don't think I appreciate the same things in music as most people I know (people who play instruments). I look for hooks, emotion and most of all, sincerity. When I am able to feel like a band is having as much fun playing their music as I am listening to it [Here, Here, Here, and Here(song 2)] despite its flaws, that's when i truly love them. I look forward to hearing more from these guys.

*Important Note: This post was written over a week ago but i was unable to poste the songs due to techinical issues. I do try to be good to you people.

This week I'm going to give you a song that we didn't play on the show, that has nothing to do with our spring theme and that I just heard for the first time today. The song, two songs actually, are from a collective project headlined by Los Angeles emcee, N.A.S.A. His new album, The Spirit of Apollo is a showcase of a great many impressive talents. Among his collaborators are the lovely and sometimes annoying M.I.A., the staggeringly talented Gift of Gab from Blackalicious, and the deep-as-all-get-out vocal stylings of Chali 2na formerly of Jurassic 5. Also several lightweight music biz personalities like Method Man, Tom Waits, and Mr. David Byrne.

The album is an amazing hip-hop experience. I have been carrying it around in my bag afraid to open it lest my good opinion of N.A.S.A. be tarnished by a subpar album. All of my expectations were destroyed when the opening noted pf the first song transitioned into the vocals of Davd Byrne. David frekaing Byrne, the man so eccentric he needs his own criminal code. It's a brilliant record and there is not a single song on it that is disappointing to listen to.

This week I'm going against the grain of our usual blog posts and abandoning the actual playlist. The keen observer will note that the playlist wasn't entirely accurate anyway and since Ishmael put the whole thing together, I really don't' feel qualified to pick one of his songs. I do, however, feel qualified to endorse a band, and specifically a song, that I have been listening to ad nauseum lately.

Entire Cities is a band from Toronto that is made up of an ever changing number of members. The membership of the bad is huge, and their instruments and vocal ranges reflect this. They have mandolins, banjos, saxophones, singing saws, gravelly-voiced mountain men and angelic women whom you could absolutely fall in love with. Similarly, the type of songs on the first full length album, Deep River, is diverse and extremely entertaining. Some songs, like The Woods, for example, are so haunting and gorgeous that I usually have to stop what I'm doing when they come on my iPod. Others, like Dancing With My Brother, which we have never been able to play on morning radio due to the prevalence of a certain swear word, cause me to thrash about like a jackass in a fit of spasmodic glee. They are a wonderfully diverse band.

The song, Cop Song, spans the territory of both the ballad and the rock song. Its loose narrative rides seamlessly along the rich vocals of Simon Borer. Also, I'll be posting their song, Dancing With My Brother, because it has bewitched and it will not let me do any less. The Burning Hell is a band made of 13+ people whose quirky lyrics and playful melodies, featuring lots of ukulele playing, have stolen my heart. (Matthew has previously posted about them.)

Their 2006 album Happy Birthday was a treat to listen to. Singer Mathias Kom's baritone contrasts well with the silly songs, and it would all fall apart if one couldn't be sure that the band has a lot of fun doing it.

The Burning Hell's new album Baby came out in late February. Fittingly, the first song on the album recounts an idealistic baby (fetus?) planning his entry into the world.

"I made all kinds of plans for when I got out
The things that I would do, the things I'd talk about
For when I learned to walk, I planned the places I would go to
Like New Brunswick and the mall, and the Toronto Zoo"

However, when the baby is born, he learns the world isn't all it's cracked up to be, at which point he decides he was much happier in the womb. He sings, "Take us back to the old world..."

Amos the Transparent sounds like a rapper to me. But instead of spitting fresh verse — which is what I think rappers do — Amos the Transparent is a beautiful indie band from Ottawa.

Our nation's capital is home to many good bands such as Hilotrons and The Acorn. Adding to the city's already impressive roster, this four-piece band led by singer Jonathan Chandler creates intricate, soothing pop gems that are perfect to listen to on a chilly afternoon, bundled up in a sweater. That said, Amos the Transparent does have its harder moments, too.

Their new EP My, What Big Teeth You Have... has, so far, received nothing but positive reviews. This week's song is Lemons, aka (BigFishLittlePond) and comes from that EP. Please listen, buy, support.

It's rare that I get to showcase any local talent on the blog. I think it may only have happened once, and that was mainly by accident, but this time, it's well worth it. Maybe Smith has been playing music in the Saskatoon area, and in many other parts of the world, for the last 6 or 7 years. In that time his music has evolved. From simple beginnings - which I confess I did not entirely enjoy, but in my defense I was sixteen and wore a backwards cap - his music has evolved.

There has been a lot of buzz surrounding the new album, Another Murder In The Morning, and I regret to say that it hasn't all been good. Some of my acquaintances have been extremely vocal about their distaste for this album, and oddly enough they were so even before it came out, but I was determined to give it a fair shake.

I've recently become enamoured with some forgotten tracks that had fallen out of my iPod rotation. Maybe Smith's seminal classics, like Bloody Nose (which was lucky enough to be #1 on the CBC Radio 3 R3-30 for a week in '07) or Open War have been looping in my musical wheelhouse for a few weeks now.

My first glimpse of Another Murder In The Morning was anything but a disappointment, and in the last year I've been disappointed by a lot of follow ups that just fell flat. I was growing concerned that my excitement for this new album was being inflated by the fondness I had for his old hits, but it lived up to my expectations entirely.
More Blood Than Sleep (After B.C.) is an incredible track. It starts out with a rhythmic chanting – one of three things that make a song great – and only gets better from there.

Hello, all. This week's feature is a six-minute opus by Elvis Perkins in Dearland. Perkins comes from a family of performers, his father having played Norman Bates in Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. Named after the King of Rock n' Roll, Perkins took to music at a young age and released his debut Ash Wednesday in 2007. Almost exactly two years later, he and his band released the self-titled followup Elvis Perkins in Dearland from which we get the Song of the Week, "Send My Fond Regards To Lonelyville."

The song is long without being indulgent and steady without being boring. The album comes out March 10 and high hopes are had by all.

I've always been a hip-hop fan. When we were children together, Ishmael and I would often stay up late to watch the television on Friday nights, which everyone knows is the randiest television of all. At about 11:30 in the night time, RapCity would come on MUCH Music and I would settle in for a feast of visual misogyny. In addition to my sexual education, I was also exposed to a new kind of music; a kind that I would not have encountered growing up in Buttfuck, Saskatchewan. I had found Wu-Tang and it was good.

That said, I didn't like Cadence Weapon one bit when I first heard his music. In Search of the Youth Crew was, and still is, one of the most offensive things that has ever touched my ears. This all changed when I saw him play at Amigo's last year with the illustrious Woodhands. He rocked the place, and I finally saw the good in him.

Since then I've been eagerly absorbing everything that I find by him, and I've found that his collaborations have been the best by far. He's worked with Dragon Fli Empire, a hip-hop outfit out of Calgary, and done a remix of the Wet Secrets song Chinball Wizard that completely rocks ass. And this song is a perfect example of Cadence Weapon's ability to mingle with his peers.

Mini TVs was originally a Chad VanGaalen song that CW and Owen Pallett of Final Fantasy recently recorded for an episode of CBC Radio's Fuze. And thanks to the magic of the Internet, it can be yours today, for free.

The Rural Alberta Advantage [myspace] is a swell band. In my world, you don't get music unless someone else puts it on a website and you download that music. Through this piecemeal method of picking up songs one by one off of the blogs that we visit - some of which you can see to the right of this post - I have managed to find almost all of Hometowns, the RAA's first full-length album. When you consider that my IPod is filled with individual songs from 2000 different albums this is actually quite a feat. And what's more, the band actually deserves the distinction.

We've featured their songs multiple times on the show before and sometimes they've appeared as my song of the week. The band delivers their typical standard of music once again with this song. At just under 2 minutes, Four Night Rider falls a little short of the usual length for their songs, but it's a hell of a song. Lead singer Paul Banwatt has a voice that is very well suited to this type of music. It's clear, it's heartfelt and he rocks the hell out of this song. They are a good band.

The Josh Reichmann Oracle Band is the latest project by — you guessed it — Josh Reichmann. Of course, Reichmann cut his indie teeth as part of Tangiers, which got rave reviews and saw success in Canada and the US. Reichmann will release his latest project's debut Crazy Power with Paper Bag Records. The record is available at the label's website where it is described as the "culmination of Josh Reichmann 's absorbed and mutated influences and ideas to date."

We should do themed playlists more often. When winter turns to spring we might do our second annual Springtime Playlist but for now, let's focus on animals.

Or, The Whale is a seven-piece alt-rock band from San Francisco, although they prefer not to be classified as such. Let's say they are part of the nebulous group of music known as "Americana." The band's name comes from Herman Melville's classic Moby Dick or, The Whale and they have been making an impression in the indie scene, even appearing on ABC's Good Morning America.

"Call and Response" is from their album Light Poles and Pines, written about Hurricane Katrina and the devastation of New Orleans. I strongly recommend you throw it onto the iPod. Despite being about a natural disaster, the song will have you dancing in no time.

Hey Everybody! Welcome to this week's animal themed song. For a long, long time now my favourite animal has been the cuddly and courageous Red Panda. Sadly, they are endangered but we are keeping them going with our constant love and attention. With this in mind I bring you a song from the Toronto, Ontario band Hot Panda.

This is the only song that I have heard from their album, The Whale-Headed Girl (a name that fits rather nicely with our animal theme), but my boss assures me that the album is gold; solid gold. We've featured the song on the show before, a few times actually, but it's never been the centre of attention and it certainly deserves to be. Of course, I never did verify that, so it's entirely possible that I'm wrong.

Hey everyone. I may not have been on the show today because of feminine issues, but that doesn't mean that I won't deliver my patented day late blog post as per usual.

I actually passed over this song in favour of last week's track by the Steel Workers and have been regretting it ever since. It's by Regina group Polymaths [myspace] and in the week since the last show I've formed a very real love affair with this song. It's so cute, just so cute. It's the kind of song that everyone really wants to write. If it were a souffle, it would be the kind of souffle that everyone really really wants to bake/eat. It's such a neat funny little song in fact, that I find myself smiling everytime I here the line

"if I praised your peerless beauty all the way to mountaintops...

I'd complain of the noise in a phonecall to the cops."

As might be evident from that line, it's a song of passionate love and sincere refusal. It's also a song that cheers me up every time I listen to it, and really that's what we should all be looking for from our music; something that affects us for the better.

This week my song comes from Montreal, Quebec. The band is United Steel Workers of Montreal and they are another in the wave of Tom Waits inspired alt-rockers that so capture my heart.

The gravelly-voiced Gern f fronts the band, with the help of a female accompaniast who actually doesn't feature too heavily in this song, so she is irrelevent right now. The band is a mix of irony and sincerity that is familiar in the indie world. Where a few years ago a band whose songs primarily deal with the steel industry and which features prominently both the mandolin and the banjo (not to mention an accordian) would have been amazing despite it's ironic subject matter, it's absolutely and uncompromisingly awesome these days. There is something to be said for antiquity and in that vein USWM does a fine job of crafting songs that remind us of a time gone by without actually resembling the period. They're little musical essays about the past.

Amy Honey [myspace] is an artist based in Seaforth, Nova Scotia. Judging from her myspace page, and the sampling of music to be had there, she is an artist with a sense of humour. Songs like Woods Hag (which details her desire to move to the woods, stop bathing and sleep in a lean to) or like Pioneer Woman (which is a hard rock/bluegrass experiment based in the theory that Honey herself is a woman pioneer living in a sod hut) are perfect examples of her delightful ability to poke fun at her own music.

But those aren't the songs I'm trying to tell you about. That song is called Farley Mowat and it's something of an ode to the prodigious Canadian authour and D-Day Dodger. Mr. Mowat's own soothing voice is featured on the track and Honey's vocals blend seamlessly with it. It's an impressive bit of musicianship and after listening to her myspace music, I'm looking forward to hearing even more from her in the future.

Well now, let's get this show on the road.

I may have been kept out of the studio today by a freak hunting accident/wound acquired during the commencement of my duties as a firefighter, but you didn't come here to be told of my various exploits which may or may not involve arson and selfless heroics. You came here for a healthy dose of the bet that we have to offer.

This week my song is an old one. Howe Sounds/Taking Abalonia, Said the Whale's first full length album, was released last year on Upper Management Records. My truest joys come in the avenues of a newborn babies smile, a stunning sunset or a delightful surprise; this song counts as one of those. Often I'll get comfortable with a band and forget what I liked about them in the first place; this is the reason I try to avoid listening to songs too much, but sometimes after you forget, something happens to make you remember it all again. Walking home late at night, a bit drunk, amidst a soft snowfall is one of those such happenings.

The song, Howe Sounds, is one of the title tracks and it's easy to see why. The instrumentation transitions from soft to powerful seamlessly and the lyrics are the typical mix of whimsy and sweet sincerity that Said The Whale exhibits frequently in their songs.

The names Matt Johnson and Kim Schifino may not mean much to anyone. But if you drop their last names, you get one of the most danceable groups in all of Christendom. Matt and Kim have been gathering a significant following ever since their self-titled 2006 album which featured the infectious hit Yea Yeah.

On Tuesday the couple released their follow-up Grand from which I have plucked my song of the week. Lessons Learned is another simple arrangement by the duo with nothing but drums, keyboards and some half-yelling by Matt. Maybe it's that simplicity, the feeling that you could probably play these songs yourself, that makes Matt and Kim so much fun to listen to. If you're unfamiliar with these Brooklynites but you love a good indie-dance tune, have a listen to Lessons Learned.

This week's featured song is by San Francisco's Vetiver. What is a vetiver, you ask? As far as I can tell, it's a type of grass indigenous to India. (For pronunciation, see Answers.com.)

Singer/songwriter Andy Cabic is the man behind the band and he will be releasing Vetiver's fourth studio album with Sub Pop, whose roster continues to attract the best bands in indie music. Tight Knit will not be available until Feb. 17 but it is already a best seller on the label's website.

The song is Everyday and its soft melodies and soothing lyrics make the 3 mins and 49 secs fly by. My favourite bit of the song:

This week my song is from the Liptonians, a Winnipeg band. The song is called Charlie's Back and it has a sort of Mighty Casey type storyline, with all of the excitement and circumstance that one would expect from such.

There isn't a lot to say about the song itself. The title reminds me of our blogs unofficial mascot, who will kick that fucking ball one day.

It is a good blend of vocals, story, instrumentation and even some unrelated screaming, but really the best part happens and is over within the first few seconds. Regardless, it has earned it's place on the blog simply because it has an opening that makes me want to scream; if only for a second or two.

Better late than never. This week I'm crazy a song by The Magic. While perusing the various top songs and albums of 2008, I heard No Sound on Wolves, Hawks and Kites and I fell in love with it.

Investigating the band revealed The Magic is from Toronto/Guelph and consists of Geordie Gordon, Evan Gordon, and Sylvie Smith. Their other songs on MySpace and NMC are worth checking out but here's the one that caught my attention first.

This week I'm presenting a song by Conor Oberst. Oberst enjoyed a prominent position in the hearts of every teenager when he was making music under the moniker Bright Eyes. The music he made then, while enjoyable and legitimate unlike everything else that could be viewed in the same category, was highly depressing. It was music thta you had to be in a mood to listen to.

His new project, however, seems to be a direct challenge to that. Ragtime piano, rockabilly guitar, blatant country lyrics; the man is not afraid of change. The song, I Don't Want To Die (In The Hospital) is actually kind of unremarkable until you consider just how different it is from his early work. Then when you finally realize that this is Bright Eyes playing an up tempo song, albeit one about death, it becomes even more surreal. And finally once you get over the shock of that you can settle comfortably into enjoying the song for what it is; a good listen.

Here's an extra song not included on the playlist. Recently, I was urged to get the Jens Lekman CD by my ladyfriend who is a big fan. I thought I liked Jens but I had no idea. The man is a musical genius. The song I'm including is from his 2007 album Night Falls Over Kortedala. Kortedala, by the way, is a neighbourhood in Jens's hometown of Gothenburg, Sweden.

A Postcard to Nina is the true story of Jens posing as his lesbian friend's boyfriend to her parents. Our Swedish hero sings about the awkward family dinner he endured while Nina's father (pronounced "fodder" by Jens) asks him questions. The comedy, sadness, and tenderness with which Jens sings has melted my heart and I have been listening to this song for the last two weeks on repeat.

This week I'm picking a song that has been ignored by we two. The Rural Alberta Advantage is a band from Toronto that formed back in 2005 and stayed entirely off of my radar until they released their new album, Hometowns, earlier this year.

The band has been very well received, even making onto a substantial number of top ten of 2008 lists, including a few from prominent US bloggers; no small feat for a Canadian band. The album itself keeps yielding song after song that becomes an invaluable addition to my music library. I can't confirm the quality of the entire CD, thanks to my sporadic and infrequent method of attaining music, but what I've heard is fantastic.

The song is called Frank, AB and it's one of those musical journeys that gets a tighter hold of you the more you listen to it. I consider it to be a very obvious choice for my last official recommendation of 2008.

This week my song comes from Brooklyn by way of Oregon. Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson [myspace] is the name of the artist and the song is called Buriedfed.

The song itself is hard to pin down. It's slightly melancholic but it switches between being heartfelt and depressing to uplifting and having an ehr of triumph despite adversity. I don't usually go in for things that are uplifting, because it's too easy to appeal to a person's sense of self pity, but in this case I actually feel like conquering my demons. For a whole four minutes and fifty-one seconds I want to punch my childhood bullies in the face and do push-ups.

Miles' voice is so powerful that despite the relatively low level of instrumental involvement the song is very moving. It's a bit like the Star Wars trilogy; boring for a combined 4 hours, but then you find out that Vader is Luke's father and the whole thing becomes a rollercoaster ride of emotion and Ewok related hijinx.

It is exactly like the Star Wars trilogy because I like it a lot.

I hate Sloan. I don't really know when my hatred for them became as intense as it is, but I hate the status they enjoy as "icons" of Canadian music. Their songs tend to be pretty damned boring, although singer Jay Ferguson's voice is pretty good, I must admit.

However, I really like Waterloo's Will Currie and the Country French whom I came across last year on the I Heart Music blog. Their piano-inspired tunes with Will Currie's songwriting made for a jolly good time. So imagine my surprise when the two acts collaborated on a song.

Push Pins was written by Will Currie who shares the vocals on the song with Jay Ferguson. They harmonize very well together and the song is a sugary pop gem. They recorded while touring together and Will Currie and the Country French have seen some good publicity as a result. In fact, the song is nominated for a Bucky Award. Let's hope they continue doing well.
