SotW for July 16th, 2008

I'm back from another rockin' episode of Green Eggs and Ham and, boy, was it ever a good one. We had slow songs, we had fast songs, and then we had in-between songs that make you nod your head while waiting in line at the bank. My song of the week is of the latter kind.

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin's musical stylings continue to impress me. Modern Mystery is another great tune from their album Pershing and requires many replays on the iPod before it's out of your head. Please enjoy:

This week I am delivering a song that has met with great critical acclaim within the part of my brain that governs my love for cute rock songs. Rockn' Roll Band Is a song by the Charlottetown band Boxer The Horse that puts all of my favourite musical elements together. It has interesting lyrics, a disjointed but present storyline, a fast tempo and a sound that makes me want to flail around like a retard. It's a head-bobber, a toe-tapper, and a finger-popper (Ed: Teehee) that is sure to deliver a wonderful time unto thee. And as if that wasn't enough to make me love the song with most of my being, the band is also named after my favourite literary character of all time, Boxer, the noble workhorse of the microchosmic Soviet Animal Republic.

We here at green eggs and ham feel that the world is entirely too sparsely populated with song that make me want to take my clothes off and dance on top of a building. Luckily, Sam Roberts, of The Sam Roberts Band, is willing to provide me with such a song. Them Kids is such an amazing ass song it had me dancing on the street earlier today. And for one as reserved and devoid of rhythm as I, that really does mean something.

The song's main theme is that kids these days are lame, and I'm inclined to agree with him. We should all throw our inhibitions to the wind and just go nuts. Listen to Sam's message, and soon enough you *will* know how to dance to rock and roll.

Greetings. It's good to be back in the studio without any trainees. Hopefully we delivered a good show and you will download some of the linked songs.

This week's pick is a Sam Cooke cover by Kentuckian Ben Sollee. A Change is Gonna Come is immediately catchy and Sollee's smooth singing and cello-playing are sure to keep you coming back for more. I have not been so excited about a new artist in quite some time so please join me in adoring him.

My Song of the Week takes a couple of listens before it really hits you. Australian born Sam Sparro operates out of Los Angeles these days and he has recently released his self-titled debut. His single is called Black & Gold and I promise you'll like it... after three full loops on the ol' iTunes.

Oh, this is exciting. I just love love love covers of late-70's glam rock songs. And when they're done against type and with a completely redone melody, it just gets sweeter.

This week, I chose a song which is a perfect example of such a thing. Surrender is a beautifully redone version of the old Cheap Trick song by Vancouver indie band, Ox.
It's sweet and soft and full of love. Just like a Care Bear.
