Matthew's Finest

Better late than never, I suppose.
I was going to make up a heart-warming, pulse-quickening fib about why I'm so late with this week's pick, but I don't think that lying to you all is the proper way to build our fledgling relationship. I really like you guys, and I feel we have a real shot at something special here.

This week I've picked something that we played in the first half of the show. Beat is a tune from Washington D.C. musical group Thao. Or maybe it's just one guy. Or maybe it's a robot. To be honest with you all, finding out which city they/he/she/it are/is from was already way more work than I was willing to do for this.

So without further ado:

SotW for March 26, 2008

My favourite song from this week's show is by The Terrordactyls. Clever name aside, this duo has a really great sense of fun about itself. Also, there's a kazoo in the song! These guys remind me of The Moldy Peaches (of Juno fame) but without the sense of shame that accompanies liking them. I hope you enjoy this week's offering, Devices.

SotW for March 19, 2008

This week's pick is from Modest Mouse's last album We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank.
This song remained untouched on my computer for about 8 months until it came up randomly on my iPod. I was walking home from school when Isaac Brock started spitting venom into my ears. Except for the F-bomb halfway through, it's totally kosher. Best song on the album, I dare say.

Well, look who it is... You think you can just waltz back in here, drunk, and expect everything to be fine? Well, all right, but this is the last time.

We're back once again for another edition of the internet's finest music related download spree. This week I'm bringing you a wonderful track by The Burning Hell, a band from Peterborough, Ontario.
Titled, Grave Situation, the song is a sordid tale of love, adultery and murder, a double murder in fact, which only serves to double the pleasure that can be had in the song. So pull up a chair, grab a blanket and a nice mug of cocoa, and prepare to be amazed.

Matthew's Finest

Hey everyone. Guess what I've got for you this week? No, I wish!

It's a song by Shad. Those of you who listened to the show today will have heard this delightful little rap ditty in the latter half of the program.

Shad, a Toronto based rapper who is originally from Kenya, is the kind of rapper that I enjoy best; the innocent kind. He has fun with his music, and rarely does the phrase, "Smack a Bitch" occur in his lyrics.

Ishmael's SotW for March 12, 2008

One of the best artists I have discovered in the last few months is Jose Gonzalez, a Swedish singer-songwriter of Argentine descent (which explains the non-Swedish name). Down the Line is from his 2007 album In Our Nature and shows off his marvelous singing voice. I can't make out what's happening in the video but it's enjoyable nonetheless.

Ishmael's SotW for March 5th, 2008

This week's Song of the Week is a piece by another great Swede, Jens Lekman. By the way, I looked it up and Jens is pronounced Yenz. The Opposite of Hallelujah is from Jens' latest album Night Falls Over Kortedala and has such a simple but enjoyable sound that is the pure essence of pop. The song's first two lines are probably my favourite:

" I took my sister down to the ocean
But the ocean made me feel stupid "

Please listen, download, do as you wish. Just enjoy.

This week I've chosen to bring you a song that was not actually played on the show. Due to the frequent use of a certain 4 letter word, this song is unfit to touch the airwaves, so says the CRTC.

Regardless of the conspiracy against them, The Coathangers have trooped on and created a delightful song. We did play one of their less inflammatory songs, Parking Lot, but I feel it lacks a certain something that this song delivers in spades.
