SotW for July 30th, 2008

In commemoration of Matthew's absence today, I'm putting up an older item. (Well, it's from 2007.) There's really nothing special about this Illinois song other than the title matches the spirit of the post. Yeah, I know it's being lazy but it's also good song, and that should redeem me slightly.

Oddly enough, the band Illinois is from Pennsylvania.

SotW for July 23rd, 2008

San Francisco's Birdmonster is set to release their new album From the Mountain to the Sea online on August 5th but I've got a little preview for all of you. The song, which happens to be my Song of the Week, is called Born To Be Your Man and it's catchy as all hell. I understand hell is very catchy: once they catch you, you cannot leave.

Peter Arcuni's singing is less than melodic but it works with the half pop, half country sound of the band. Birdmonster is definitely an act to remember. Please enjoy.

Matthew's Finest

This week I bring you a song that rocks out with it's various appendages out.
It's got a full time job, and that's in the field of rock. And then it takes it's kids to their intramural rock practice on the weekends and assists the coach.
This song has to get a special classification on it's license for dangerous amounts of rock.
This song can smell what The Rock is cooking.
This song won the lottery, but kept it's job on the assembly line at the Rock factory because it's so dedicated.
This song was recently named Gibraltar's main rock.
This song keeps seagulls out of your garbage.
This song will put a chicken in every pot.
This song is responsible for the remission in your Grandma's glaucoma.

I assure you, it's a good-ass song.

SotW for July 16th, 2008

I'm back from another rockin' episode of Green Eggs and Ham and, boy, was it ever a good one. We had slow songs, we had fast songs, and then we had in-between songs that make you nod your head while waiting in line at the bank. My song of the week is of the latter kind.

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin's musical stylings continue to impress me. Modern Mystery is another great tune from their album Pershing and requires many replays on the iPod before it's out of your head. Please enjoy:

Matthew's Finest

This week I am delivering a song that has met with great critical acclaim within the part of my brain that governs my love for cute rock songs. Rockn' Roll Band Is a song by the Charlottetown band Boxer The Horse that puts all of my favourite musical elements together. It has interesting lyrics, a disjointed but present storyline, a fast tempo and a sound that makes me want to flail around like a retard. It's a head-bobber, a toe-tapper, and a finger-popper (Ed: Teehee) that is sure to deliver a wonderful time unto thee. And as if that wasn't enough to make me love the song with most of my being, the band is also named after my favourite literary character of all time, Boxer, the noble workhorse of the microchosmic Soviet Animal Republic.

We're back for another dose of indie music, the kind that makes you stare at your shoes as you awkwardly shuffle about on the dancefloor, contemplating the price of a shirt that proves you attended the indie dance-fest at which you only shuffled about awkwardly whilst looking at your feet. Matthew's Finest

We here at green eggs and ham feel that the world is entirely too sparsely populated with song that make me want to take my clothes off and dance on top of a building. Luckily, Sam Roberts, of The Sam Roberts Band, is willing to provide me with such a song. Them Kids is such an amazing ass song it had me dancing on the street earlier today. And for one as reserved and devoid of rhythm as I, that really does mean something.

The song's main theme is that kids these days are lame, and I'm inclined to agree with him. We should all throw our inhibitions to the wind and just go nuts. Listen to Sam's message, and soon enough you *will* know how to dance to rock and roll.

SotW for July 9th, 2008

Greetings. It's good to be back in the studio without any trainees. Hopefully we delivered a good show and you will download some of the linked songs.

This week's pick is a Sam Cooke cover by Kentuckian Ben Sollee. A Change is Gonna Come is immediately catchy and Sollee's smooth singing and cello-playing are sure to keep you coming back for more. I have not been so excited about a new artist in quite some time so please join me in adoring him.

Oh, this is exciting. I just love love love covers of late-70's glam rock songs. And when they're done against type and with a completely redone melody, it just gets sweeter.

This week, I chose a song which is a perfect example of such a thing. Surrender is a beautifully redone version of the old Cheap Trick song by Vancouver indie band, Ox.
It's sweet and soft and full of love. Just like a Care Bear.

Nothing today. Next week though.

Enjoy this picture of a kitty.
"Where are you going, with that independent music?" it asks, forlorn.
