SotW for April 30th, 2008

Hello again. One of the catchiest songs you're bound to hear is this week's song of the week by Cold War Kids. The other day Matthew saw an older man with a white beard grooving to this song in his car and lovin' it. I guarantee you'll enjoy Hang Me Up to Dry.

Matthew's Finest

Hey everybody. How in the world are ya? That's good, I'm glad it's going good for you.

This week's song is from the ever fantastic Man Man, the handsome devils pictured above. The most amazing thing about these young gentlemen is that they're the gruffest, surliest looking band in the world, but they can sing as sweetly as the bluest eyed little Aryan girl while losing none of their raw masculinity. The track is called Mister Jung Stuffed and it's tuneful melodies and tribal beat will set your heart to racing.

Matthew's Finest

This is one one the surest signs of the impending rapture: I am posting my song of the day within 12 hours of the show ending. I know, right?

Anyway, this week's song comes to us from Los Angeles band LIARS. I heard this song years ago when I was the tender age of just 18 years old. Yessir, it was the days of Ragtime, Flapper Hats and Prohibition, and we were all dancing the Charlseton to the hot licks coming out of this fine coastal American city.

The title is improperly punctuated, and that bothers me to no end, but it still holds a special place in my heart. It's a fast-paced song that *will* rock your socks right off. So be warned everyone: this is now a garter manditory zone.

LIARS - Mr. You're On Fire Mr.

SotW for April 23rd, 2008

Well I hope everyone who listened today enjoyed the show. Matthew and I literally put one hour of work into putting the show together. So you know, you'd all better appreciate the effort.

This week's song is by Toronto band Woodhands, and it's quite an earful. The song is a bit disjointed and 'all over the place' (as the kids say) but I promise that if you give it a chance, you'll come to like it. Here's Be Back Soon.

Matthew's Finest

Punctual as always, and smelling of morning blooms, I bring to you another splendid song. This week I couldn't decide on just one song, such was the intensity of my enjoyment, so I've decided to just defy convention and post two songs.

The first is from local artist, A Gentle Forest. This track, titled Springtime, is a delightful little ditty that makes use of the artists lovely voice and penchant for soft guitar harmonies.

A Gentle Forest - Springtime

My second choice is very much in keeping with this week's 'goodbye winter' theme. Change of Seasons is a song by Sweet Things, a Toronto based rock group that is tearing my heart to pieces on their way to the top of the charts. I could liken my love for this wonderful song to the love I have for a good pie, or a stiff bike-ride.

SotW for April 16th, 2008

This week's recommendation is a song from Calgary-based Chad VanGaalen, whose album Skelliconnection almost won the 2007 Polaris Prize. Our brother from another province is also a good illustrator and animator, having hand-drawn the album artwork on some of his earlier discs before mailing them to his fans. He also did the animation for his music videos, including this week's Song of the Week: Flower Gardens.

Matthew's Finest

Deary me! What's this? A communication from your indisposed host? Couldn't be, but since I am at a computer I suppose I should carry through with my intended task.
The keen listener will have noted that I did not join Ishmael this morning (the weeping and the boredom were both dead giveaways), but I HAVE decided that I would grace the internet, once again, with my splendiferous taste in music.

This week's offering is from a Washington (D.C. or state? You decide!) band called Fleet Foxes. I know as little about this band as one can possibly know. They are undoubtedly made up of members, numbering from one to infinity, and they are most likely of a homogenous gender, because that's usually how this works out.
The song which concerns us is White Winter Hymnal. It has an eerie quality and it reminds me very much of the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack.

Gosh darn! For all the time I spend not posting, you would think I had stuff to do all the time. Sadly that is not the case. I've spent the last week feeling the ethers of the Earth ebb and flow, and they've delivered unto me the courage to publish a wonderful track by the glorious young woman known only as Julie Doiron.

No More is a unique track on Doiron's album, Woke Myself Up in that it seems to be skewed more towards a catchy pop tune than the rest of her more... dry offerings. Nothing against her music; I enjoy it thoroughly and have nothing but the greatest respect for her, but sometimes a catchy tune is all I'm looking for. In that capacity No More delivers splendidly. So, without further ado, I give thee:
