Playlist for September 1st, 2010

I'm fucking out of here! Screw you crapsville, I'll miss you all deeply. I (Matthew (the cute one)) am moving away for a year, in order to be near my lady and experience the crazy fucking culture of Canada's west coast. Of course, this means that you will all have to make due with Ishmael being a consumate professional all the time. Terrible, I know.

Here's the playlist!

Maylee Todd & Circle Research - Hooked

Kula Shaker - Ruby

Sufjan Stevens - I Walked

CSS - Canonball (Breeders cover)

THOR - Rosie [myspace]

Arcade Fire - We Used To Wait

Hesta Prynn - Can We Go Wrong

Wolf Parade - Cave-O-Sapien

Ruby Coast - Creep Me Out [Free EP]

EXTRAS:

So many cool things are happening. In keeping with being the most amazing working band in the industry, Arcade Fire's website features an HTML5 experiment by filmmaker Chris Milk (who has made videos for the likes of Kanye fucking West.) It's an interactive video project featuring that will blow you away, guaranteed. If it doesn't, I will eat any amount of hats. No restrictions. See http://www.thewildernessdowntown.com to have your mind blown off.

The Ruby Coast, who we've been fans of for a long time, are releasing their new EP Whatever This Is for free, all y'all gotta do is tweet at 'em.

The new Ted Leo video features funnymen Paul F. Tompkins and Judge John Hodgman. It's a fantastic video.

That's all there is folks. Enjoy the greatest fucking FM-Phasis show lineup that there has ever been and remember to drop Ishmael a coin or two in the fall. I want this show to be here when I get back.

Playlist for August 18, 2010

Hello friends. It's another exciting week in music. There are several great bands coming to Saskatoon in the next few weeks and some great new albums have come out (such as Let It Sway by SSLYBY). Also, it turns out Kanye West's next album will feature the haunting sounds of Bon Iver. We're playing a great Kanye song near the end of the show in anticipation of what is sure to be the best album of all time. Of all time!

Check out the blog donewaiting.com. They're posting exclusive tracks from the band Ghost Shirt. The song "Astronauts of Fate," which we are playing this week, is the latest installment of a Ghost Shirt project that they're calling 52 singles in 52 weeks. This is number 24 and, like all the others, it's an astonishing classic. They're releasing a brand new track every week and so far they've all been great. Get them all at donewaiting.com and watch for the rest.

Remember that the "Insult Matthew" contest is still on. Leave insulting comments on this post and Matthew will give you a shoutout on air. Listen tonight at 10:30 on 90.5 FM or on cfcr.ca.

On June 23, 1611 the mutinous crew of Henry Hudson's fourth voyage set Hudson, his son and seven loyal crew members adrift in an open boat in what is now Hudson Bay; they were never heard from again.

Every four years, we North Americans are shaken out of our apathy and drawn into the irresistible world of football—the real football, that is. There's nothing better than waking up at five in the morning to watch two countries you don't much care for battle it out in a 90 minute match for a result that doesn't much excite you. Yessir, the world's greatest game! (Actually, the World Cup is terribly exciting for me but I understand most Canadians don't give a hoot.)

If you are looking for refuge from the constant World Cup coverage, here's our 100% soccer-free playlist.

Another Wednesday, another day when I could be performing stand-up comedy. In case you haven't heard about it, there is an open mic comedy event every Wednesday at Vangelis on Broadway. It's generally a good time and I have been meaning to perform a five-minute set for some time, but I always chicken out and use the radio show as an excuse.

Well, since we're all here, let's check out this week's excellent playlist featuring great songs by Born Ruffians, The Sadies, and an amazing new track by LCD Soundsystem to close off the show from their upcoming album This Is Happening. Listen, download, share, and most importantly, please support these artists if you like their stuff.

Playlist for May 6th, 2010

An exciting show this week, with new songs from three of Canada's biggest bands: Wolf Parade, The New Pornographers, and the first new effort since 2005 by Toronto's Broken Social Scene. Thanks for checking us out. Here's the playlist.

Playlist:
Levek - Loon and the Lion

Mystery Jets - Flash a Hungry Smile
Wolf Parade - Ghost Pressure

The New Pornographers - Your Hands [herohill]
Broken Social Scene - Texico Bitches
Atmosphere - Yesterday
The Knux - Floozy [free ep]
Shad - Yaa I Get It
Aloe Blacc - I Need A Dollar

Here are some cool videos. The first is the music video for the song "What To Say" by Born Ruffians from their upcoming album Say It.

Perennial favourites of the show Sebastien Grainger (formerly of Death From Above) and Josh Reichmann (currently of The Josh Reichmann Oracle Band) have formed a group together, awesomely titled Bad Tits. They're using the familiar aspects of their old music, heavy guitar from Grainger and amazing synth from Reichmann, but they treat them very differently. Through some substantial producing they come up with a new sound that should delight their older fans. Also, the video is wacky and awesome.

Bad Tits - Bankok Hilton from Hand Drawn Dracula on Vimeo.

Finally, London, ON emcee Shad, has a new album about to be released title TSOL. Yaa, I Get It is the first single from the album, and the video feature Shad roaming the streets in a distinct 99 Problems style.

All right homies, let's get down to some real shit. There was a sad passing last week that we forgot to mention properly on the show. Devon Clifford, the drummer for Vancouver band You Say Party! We Say Die! collapsed on stage and later died of a brain hemmorage a Vancouver hospital. A sad day for everyone on the Canadian music scene. This week's playlist has, purely by coincidence, a strong presence by musician/producer/magician Danger Mouse, whom you may remember as the skinny part of Gnarls Barkley.

You'll hear Danger Mouse's work in the song Little Girl (which features Julian Casablancas of the Strokes), in the new act Broken Bells (the other half of which is James Mercer, lead singer of the Shins), and in the brand new Black Keys album, which Danger Mouse produced.

That's kablamo!
